‘Every little helps’ for Wellingborough care home

A Wellingborough care home has been chosen to receive the support of a community-based volunteer initiative by supermarket giant, Tesco.

Five members of staff from Tesco’s Wellingborough store volunteered their time and rolled up their sleeves, getting stuck in with transforming the garden at Lancum House care home in readiness for the residents to enjoy during the summer months.

The care home, located on Bush Close, provides accommodation for up to 43 people, including those living with dementia, and will celebrate its 10th anniversary of care provision in July this year.

There was a lot of digging and ground preparation before the plants and flowers, including Buddleia, Marigolds, Begonias and Chrysanthemums, were planted. The volunteers also helped with the renovating of old garden furniture and ornaments.

Yvonne Murphy, home manager at the Shaw healthcare-run care home, said: “I would like to thank Tesco and its community champions at the Wellingborough store for their time, effort and sheer hard work in helping to make our garden a real haven for our residents to enjoy.  They love to have their lunch outdoors if the weather allows and the garden is a great place to host musical entertainment, too.  It will be that much more enjoyable for them now.”

There are many residents at the home who are keen to try their hand at gardening and now, with the newly raised flower beds, thanks to a kind donation from Higgins Building Supplies, it will be much easier for them to get involved with growing flowers, vegetables and herbs. Other donations were received from relatives and staff at the home.

The official opening of the garden will be at the home’s summer fayre on the 14th July, for which they will be purchasing a BBQ and water feature with a £100 donation kindly provided by local business and funeral directors Chambers and Brighty. The Mayor of Wellingborough and his deputy will be invited to carry out the official opening.

Emma-Jayne Ward, community champion at Tesco, said: “Tesco is committed to giving back to the local community. When we heard that Lancum House needed their garden renovating, we were more than happy to help. We really hope that the residents will enjoy the transformation for years to come and we look forward to working with Lancum House in the future.”

Shaw healthcare provides a spectrum of services from comprehensive care packages through to low level support in the community for older people and adults with physical, sensory or mental health support needs.
