This month, residents at both The Green Dronfield and The Callywhite came together to celebrate VE Day with the Big Dig.
Residents, staff, friends & family rolled up their sleeves, put on their gardening gloves and got stuck into sprucing up the garden, getting it ready for summer.
Sarah Moulton, Home Manager for The Green & The Callywhite said: “It’s been great to see so many people getting involved and getting out into the garden. Some residents that don’t normally like to leave their room have been inspired to join the celebrations and get out into the fresh air.”
The day was certainly enhanced by the glorious weather. One resident commented: “I can’t remember the last time it was so sunny! It’s the perfect day to remember the good old days!”
There were plenty of wartime stories to share and many of the residents found that they made connections with others in the home that they had not realised were there before.
Deepak Jaiswal, Home Proprietor shared: “This has been a truly uplifting and inspiring day. The staff have worked really hard to make this an unforgettable VE Day celebration. Their costumes look great too!”
Staff from both homes dressed up in wartime farm outfits. One resident commented: “I used to have a head scarf just like that.”
Another surprise for the day, was the gifting of a brand new greenhouse from one of our kind relatives. Donna Hodgson, Activities Co-ordinator at The Green commented: “They’ll be no stopping our Gardening Club now!”
The ‘Big Dig’ concluded with a VE Day themed afternoon tea. Everyone’s hard work was well rewarded with a good old cuppa and a slice of cake.
