Exceptionally talented Sanctuary Care staff have once again wowed the judges in the 2016 Christmas Cake Competition.
Now in its ninth year, the contest tasks staff from Sanctuary Care’s homes across the country to make a traditional fruit Christmas cake, which were iced to their own design and judged at Sanctuary’s Worcester offices.
The winning creation was an absolutely stunning mouse and teacup design made by Natalie Burnett, a care assistant from Ivydene Residential and Nursing Home in Ivybridge, Plymouth.
Speaking about the victory she said: “It is the first year I have entered the competition so it felt absolutely brilliant to win. I was pleasantly shocked to say the least and our residents were just chuffed to bits, it means so much to all of them.”
Coming in close second place was Chef Manager Matthew Fulleylove from Lammas House Residential Care Home in Coventry, whose cake featured an exhausted Santa sat in front of a roaring fire. Matthew’s creation got the highest score for taste.

n joint third place was a cake featuring Santa at the top of a chimney made by Care Assistant Dee Pickering from Ivydene Residential and Nursing Home and a stunning carousel created by Karin Hoogenhout, Administrator at Ashley House Residential Care Home in Bordon. Karin’s cake also won the Sanctuary Staff Vote for best design.
Speaking about the competition Sanctuary Care’s hospitality manager Mark Ord said this year the talent had been stronger than ever before. “The cakes were absolutely outstanding so a huge well done to everyone,” he added.
The prestigious contest is open to the teams at Sanctuary Care’s homes across the country. The cakes were judged on presentation, skill, creativity and of course taste.
