the Gables-care industry newsHealthcare Homes group, an East Anglian-based residential and domiciliary care provider, has today announced the winners of an inter-home ‘Bake-Off’ challenge.  After an overwhelming response from staff and residents of its 23 homes, The Gables in Gorleston, Great Yarmouth were crowned the first place winners with their colourful, floral design that wouldn’t look out of place at a flower show.

The Gables team created three cakes in total that were decorated in white icing, and covered in beautiful handmade flowers and butterflies in orange, yellow, blue, white and green icing.  They were then displayed on an ornate mirror, to bring the whole display to life.

Home Meadow in Toft, Cambridgeshire came a close second and were awarded the runner up prize with a stunning three tiered butterfly and flower design that caught the judges’ eye.  Oaklands House in Reydon, near Southwold, was awarded third place for an artistic 3D recreation of a typical day at Southwold seaside; with bucket and spade, deckchair and lighthouse included.

The ‘Bake-Off Challenge’ was held to celebrate Healthcare Homes’ 10th anniversary. Staff and residents from each of the group’s residential homes were asked to design and create a cake that celebrated the tenth anniversary. Competitors could choose any design, flavour or colour of cake but they had to include the number 10 somewhere.

Delighted by the overwhelming response to the competition, Rita Coleman and Sue Campbell-Bannerman, Group Activities Co-ordinators for the Healthcare Homes group said:  “The standard of the entries was exceptional. For the judging panel there were no losers, and deciding the winner was definitely not easy. We have an amazing group of Activities Coordinators and we are really proud of the wonderful work they do with our residents, in bringing quality and enjoyment to their lives. All in all it was a hugely successful event and a great day was had by all.”

In addition, five other homes received special commendation certificates in recognition of their exceptional work with residents; St Leonards (Mundford, Norfolk), Home Close (Fulbourn, Cambs), Hillcroft House (Stowmarket, Suffolk), Barking Hall (Needham Market, Suffolk) and Maynell House (Felixstowe, Suffolk).

Cakes were baked and on display during National Care Home Open Day on Friday 19th June, and the winners were then selected by a panel following the event.   Prizes and certificates will be presented to the three winning homes, while the homes that were recognised with a special commendation will also receive certificates.
