A special dementia-friendly screening of the Gene Kelly classic Singin’ In The Rain, took place at the Merlin Cinema in Wellington. It was a great hit with its older audience. The film was shown as part of the Dementia Week programme in Wellington, Somerset, and was organised by the Wellington Dementia Action Alliance.
A group of five people with dementia were accompanied by staff from Camelot House and Lodge to view the matinée, travelling to and from their home on Taunton Road in a Slinky bus, an accessible bus service run by Somerset County Council for people unable to access conventional transport.
Activities co-ordinator, Richard Dempslake and his assistant Emily-Anne Williams, embraced the movie-themed day by dressing in yellow and red.
Richard said: “Our residents had a wonderful time, and sang along to all the songs.
“They especially enjoyed Gene Kelly’s big number, with his splash-filled umbrella dance. “
The outing is part of varied programme of activities organised for the residents of Camelot House and Lodge by Richard and assistant Emily-Anne. Other events planned for the near future include fruit-picking at Halberton Court Farm, an Indian cultural day, day-trips to the beaches at Exmouth and Dawlish, and a day when owl and birds of prey will be brought to the grounds of the home,
