Cheshire care home praised for ‘outstanding’ level of care

Staff and residents at an MHA care home in Cheshire are celebrating after independent inspectors rated its service as ‘exceptionally caring’ following their recent visit.

MHA Handsworth achieved an ‘Outstanding’ rating in the ‘caring’ category of the Care Quality Commission’s (CQC) report and ‘Good’ in all other areas of inspection – these rank the home’s safety, effectiveness, responsiveness and management.
This is a remarkable improvement on the previous inspection which was carried out last year and had found the home to ‘require improvement’ in several of these categories.

There was high praise in the report for how ‘people were truly respected and valued as individuals – and empowered as partners in their care in an exceptional service.’

Inspectors commented on how committed the staff were to meeting residents’ needs, particularly when it comes to their hobbies and interests. Handsworth has a full-time activities co-ordinator and, through its ‘Seize the Day’ scheme, offers individuals the chance to complete an activity they have always wanted to do.

The home also has a dedicated Chaplain, who supports residents and staff, irrespective of their beliefs, and contributes to the day to day well-being of everyone living and working there.

Other comments from the report included:
• People received an exceptional standard of care and support from a committed, passionate and caring group of staff.
• Activities were meaningful and reflected people’s interests and personal preferences.
• Staff consistently demonstrated the values of the home and put people at the heart of everything they did.
• People living at Handsworth benefited from a large accessible outside space that was well maintained. People told us they enjoyed being able to go outside, particularly during the summer months.

Deputy home manager, Julia Ronan, commented: “We are delighted to receive such a fantastic all-round CQC inspection. The ‘outstanding’ rating in the ‘caring’ category reflects the high quality of care that our team provides to residents at the home.”

Natalie Ward, Area Support Manager, added: “The residents are a part of everything we do at Handsworth – we’re like a family. We take everyone’s like and dislikes into account so that we can offer them a truly personalised experience. That’s why we love to have such a varied activities programme – we want people to spend time enjoying themselves both inside and outside the home.”
