Castleford care home rated ‘Good’ by Care Quality Commission


Newfield Lodge care home in Castleford has been rated ‘Good’ by the Care Quality Commission in an inspection report published this week.  The home achieved the enviable rating in four key areas of care: safe, caring, responsive and well-led.  CQC made the unannounced visit on 28 February 2017.  Newfield Lodge, which receives a score of 9.3/10 on the independent comparison site, are now one of only 13 homes in the WF10 area to receive a ‘Good’ rating. 

The report was complimentary about all areas of the home, operated by Ideal Carehomes, but particularly for the staff who work there.  The Inspectors observed staff being consistently caring, compassionate and attentive to residents, supporting them in a sensitive and discreet manner. Staff were found to have a genuine passion for their work.  Residents were also highly complementary about Newfield Lodge’s staff, informing the Inspectors that they feel extremely well cared for. 

Staff were keen to express confidence in Home Manager, Paula Mountjoy, stating they are completely supported for the continued development of the home.  Paula said, “I am so proud to have achieved such a glowing report from the CQC inspection.  The teams’ efforts and dedication to their residents is second to none. All our staff make a real difference to the lives of our residents and the report just proves that Newfield Lodge is a great place to live. I’m aiming for our next report to be Outstanding.  We have the team, the beautiful building and the dedication to make that happen – not to mention our wonderful residents whom we care for dearly!”

The CQC Inspectors also reviewed the food prepared for residents by Newfield Lodge’s award winning chef, Chris Beech. Having been named the Great British Care Awards Chef of the Year 2017, the Inspectors added further praise to Chris’ talents, finding the cuisine he provides to be both nutritious and varied.

The Inspectors noted the pleasant atmosphere and positive buzz throughout the home.  When the Inspectors arrived, residents were enjoying a game of noughts and crosses with staff whilst discussing an upcoming trip to the local garden centre to purchase vegetables to grow in the garden’s raised beds.  CQC were impressed with the schedule of activities on display which included trips out, entertainers, a Chinese pop-up restaurant, dementia café and also dates for upcoming Social Committee Meetings. 

The overarching theme of the report is that the people who live at Newfield Lodge feel safe, are happy and are being cared for and supported with privacy and dignity, with the high quality of care enhancing the lives of the residents.
