Care home residents strut their stuff on the dancefloor

Brinnington Hall care home residents have been strutting their stuff on the dancefloor to keep fit and have fun during the coronavirus pandemic.

The care team created the ‘Strictly Come Brinnington’ competition to bring both staff and residents together through their love of music and dancing. The residents and team worked together to create fun routines to showcase to their ‘studio audience’ in the homes social area. The competition was such a success, virtually bringing not only the local community together but also sparking the attention of professional dancer, Flavia Cacace, from the hit ITV show!

Residents were encouraged to sign up and pick which song they would like to perform.  Working with a member of the care team, they then spent time working on their routines, practicing each afternoon and even creating their own props and costumes.  Dancing duo, Sarah Slack and Margaret Harley created a lively routine to ‘You’re the One That I Want’ from the hit musical, Grease, and even designed a flying pink car to really set the scene!

On the day of the competition, the care home was transformed with colourful and glittery decorations to recreate the well-known TV set of ITV’s ‘Strictly Come Dancing’. The care team all took on different roles including trying their hand at hosting and introducing each pair and their song.

The competition was varied in the musical choice with contestants dancing to the ‘Time Warp’ from The Rocky Horror Show, ‘You’re the One That I Want’ from Grease, ‘Dance’ by Laurel and Hardy and ‘The Lion Sleeps Tonight’ from Disney’s Lion King.

Strictly Come Dancing star, Flavia Cacace, sent everyone at Brinnington Hall a fun congratulatory video, she said, ‘I wanted to say a huge congratulations to everybody that took part in the strictly competition. I did watch every single performance and I absolutely loved all of them. I certainly could not have picked a winner – Well done for all of your hard work and creativity and keep up the good work and I hope to see you all in the future, lots of love!’.

Brinnington Hall’s Activity Co-ordinators ensured the residents families were also able to enjoy the event by streaming the performances live on Facebook. Much like the ITV show, the competition winners were selected by ‘the viewers at home’ with each contestant receiving many votes and heart-warming comments from their families and friends.

It was a very close competition, however resident Margaret Harley and Care Assistant Sarah Slack took home the crown for their fantastic Grease tribute. Margaret said, ‘I had a brilliant time working with Sarah to put together our routine, I have always loved Grease and I knew straight away that would be what I dance to. The team did a fabulous job of making the competition really fun and being the winner was just the  cherry on top!’.

Home Manager, Rachel McIntosh, said, ‘We had so much fun during our Strictly Come Brinnington event and I am so proud of my team for going above and beyond to make it a fun and special event for our residents’.
