Residents at care homes in Dorset have received a delivery of Christmas gifts thanks to a generous community initiative, started by a local mum.

Fiona Elliott, who lives in Poole, started the ‘Dorset Mums Christmas Gifts of Love’ project in August this year. She began reaching out to the local community to ask for donations of small gifts to be given to people in care homes who may not be receiving anything at Christmas time.

Fiona asked local groups such as schools and scouts, nurseries and businesses, as well as local families to donate, and has now started delivering these to care homes across the area.

Three such homes to benefit are Ashley Court in Poole, Blandford Grange in Blandford Forum and The Old Vicarage in Leigh, near Sherborne; all of which are part of the Healthcare Homes Group.

Fiona contacted the group before Christmas to offer this generous donation and has now started delivering the gifts to residents.  Before Christmas, the staff at Ashley Court in Poole took delivery of two boxes full of presents which were shared amongst residents.  The team also presented Fiona with flowers and chocolates as a gesture of thanks for her kindness.

Fiona’s gifts have now also reached the residents at The Old Vicarage and Blandford Grange and in total over 500 gift bags have been donated to care home groups and providers across Dorset. They have also been delivered via doctors’ surgeries to elderly patients on their own, churches and some businesses and organisations who are providing a free Christmas lunch for the elderly who would otherwise have been on their own.

Ashley Court Home Manager Gigy Johnson said, “We were overwhelmed to receive this wonderfully thoughtful gesture from Fiona and her team of volunteers.  We have eight residents who unfortunately don’t have family visiting this Christmas, so will be receiving the gifts from the Dorset Mums.  It will be such a pleasure to give these to them on Christmas morning.

“I am so delighted that residents at other homes in the area will also be benefitting, and on behalf of all residents and staff, I would like to offer our heartfelt thanks to Fiona and her team.  What a wonderful demonstration of a true Christmas spirit.”
