A Dorset care home is celebrating after being officially rated as ‘Outstanding’ by its regulator.
The accolade followed a two-day unannounced inspection by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).
Addressing a celebration party at the home Mark Aitchison, Colten Care’s Chief Executive, described the achievement as “fantastic”.
He added: “It’s a tribute to the pride, passion, commitment and dedication of our team.
“There have been more than 25,000 inspections by the CQC and only three per cent are ‘Outstanding’.
“Colten Care has 20 homes with four rated ‘Outstanding’ – 20 per cent of our homes – and the other 16 as ‘Good’. That’s a truly exceptional statistic by any measure.”
The four-strong CQC team looked at every aspect of Canford Chase with the home assessed across five criteria – being safe, effective, caring, responsive and well led.
The 19-page report singled out staff for particular praise, highlighting how people “were treated with kindness, respect and compassion.”
Other comments included:
• “Care was planned and delivered in line with current good practice and standards. Standards of nursing care were very high.”
• “A vibrant activity programme based on people’s hobbies, interests and wishes and tailored to their individual needs.”
• “A positive, person-centred, open and inclusive culture.”
• “Staff were motivated in their work and proud of the service. Staff turnover was low.”
Charlotte Wilson, Home Manager, said: “I have never worked anywhere with such a fabulous team as we have here at Canford Chase.
“Our residents are at the heart of everything we do and our staff are dedicated to delivering the highest level of care. It is wonderful for that to be recognised by the CQC.”
Residents, staff and management marked the achievement with a giant celebration chocolate cake, baked by the home’s chef, and champagne.
Family owned Colten Care has 20 quality care homes across Dorset, Hampshire, Sussex and Wiltshire. Its 21st home, Bourne View, which is set in the Bourne Valley nature reserve in Poole, welcomes its first resident next month (March).
