A Brigg-based home for residents with a learning disability has a flair for festive fare, winning a Christmas cake competition thanks to a traditional family recipe.
The Birches scooped top prize in the Hica Group’s Christmas cake competition – and won a festive hamper, donated by a catering service.
The winning cake was selected from dozens of entries after residents from across Hica’s care homes got busy in the kitchen to cook-up a winning recipe.
In the best bake-off tradition, The Birches scored top marks from judges including Jackie Bateman, a Hica board member and Julia Woodcock, executive PA for the HICA Group.
They were at Hica’s Anchor Court head office in Hull, where the cakes were judged on appearance, texture and taste.
The winner and runners-up all scored highly, with the judges scoring them top marks for their delicious creations.
The other finalists were The Anchorage in Grimsby and Raleigh Court in Hull with their beautifully decorated and carefully crafted fruit cakes.
Hica originally launched the competition as part of its activity-led care programme. This enables residents living with dementia or learning disabilities to enjoy and benefit from a host of creative activities and beneficial pursuits.
Residents from the Birches said: “It’s lovely to have won but everyone who took part deserves to be praised. The competition was great fun, and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves as we do like to bake. We’re really looking to next year’s competition.”
