Frome care home supports budding young chefs

Gracewell of Frome, on Welshmill Lane, were delighted to sponsor young cooking enthusiasts from the community in the local heat of the Rotary Young Chef Competition.

Held on Monday 26 November, this year’s heat saw the short-listed 12 entrants, made up of Frome College Students, go head-to-head as part of the annual national competition organised by Rotary International. Gracewell of Frome, which provides high quality nursing, residential and dementia care, were keen to get involved, providing bespoke chef whites personalised with each entrant’s name.

The four-stage contest aims to support and encourage the development of cookery skills by encouraging young students between the ages of 11-17 to learn how to cook healthy meals, develop their food presentation, organisational and planning skills, and develop the ability to cope in a demanding situation.

Entrants were tasked with preparing a three-course healthy meal for 2 people in 2 hours, costing less than £20. Judges, including award-winning Head Chef at Gracewell Simon Lewis and chefs from Orchard Leigh, looked out for costing, planning, table presentation, neatness of working area and hygiene, as well as the taste and presentation of all three courses.

All competitors at the community-supported event received participation medals and a certificate, whilst overall winner Maddie Blackburn scooped a trophy.

Maddie will now go through to the district finals, taking place between January and mid-February. The winner and runner-up from each final will be entered into the regional finals, before the national final is held in April 2019 at Leeds City College.

Debbie Goodsell, Home Admissions Advisor at Gracewell of Frome, said:

“Gracewell of Frome was delighted to be involved in this community event which supports Frome College and its students.

“The professionalism and calmness of the students was fantastic to see. I have never seen three professional chefs so excited to taste the amazing food that was produced to such a high standard and quality.

“The students and their tutor, Emily McMunn, should be extremely proud.

“Congratulations to Maddie and good luck at the next stage!”
