Sanctuary Care home residents enjoy a summer of globe-trotting

Residents at Sanctuary Care homes across the country have been embarking on ‘virtual’ cruise trips during a summer-long globe-trotting expedition.

Throughout August and September the teams at each of Sanctuary Care’s homes have re-created holiday hot spots from across the world right in the heart of their homes, inviting people from their local communities along to celebrate.

Among them was Ravenhurst Residential Care Home in Stourport-on-Severn, where the residents embarked on their ‘maiden voyage’ for a cruise launch party, with Gerry Graham and his ‘World Cruise Show’. There was an abundance of fantastic food – and of course the team dressed to impress as staff aboard a liner.

For the rest of the week the residents experienced French knitting in Paris, pizza making in Italy, arts and crafts in Spain as well as a piñata party in Mexico – and in real time took a mid-week trip to Weston-super-Mare for a breezy beach day in Blighty.

Other events which ‘transported’ residents to different destinations all over the world included:

– A trip to India for residents of Orchard House Residential Care Home in Cambridgeshire. Activities leader Emma Mills said: “Seeing our residents’ faces light up when we did the Bollywood chair dancing was a highlight – they all got involved and said they really enjoyed themselves.”

– A day in the Philippines for residents of Watlington & District Nursing Home in Oxfordshire, with the residents and team sailing across the world in a gigantic hand-made cruise liner named after the manager Julie Cooper, enjoying a traditional dance performed by the home’s own team, as well as authentic cuisine.

-A Spanish festival in Pershore for residents of Heathlands Residential Care Home.

-At Briarscroft Residential Care Home in Birmingham the residents enjoyed the carnival celebrations of a Mardi Gras. They also had a ‘passport control’ so their passports could be marked by rubber stamps made especially for the event.
