EachStep Blackley at 3rd Sector Care Awards

A Manchester dementia care home collected a top award for its compassionate end of life care yesterday at the prestigious 3rd Sector Care Awards.

EachStep Blackley received the ‘End of Life Care Award’ at the prestigious event, which was hosted in London by Dame Esther Rantzen. The awards are one of the biggest honours in the care sector and are backed by the leading representative bodies for health and social care.

The pioneering specialist care home supports 60 older people living with dementia and is part of the national social care charity Community Integrated Care.

Judges at the awards event praised the home for having true compassion and care for people reaching the end of their lives, and their loved ones.

Staff working at the home get to know the life history of every person living at EachStep Blackley. This ensures that they can not only deliver the support that people want, but also help them pass away in a way that is most comforting and comfortable to them. This includes everything from enabling people to listen to the music that matters most to them through to following their religious practices.

The team also worked with volunteers to build a stunning new family room which allows relatives to spend as much time as possible with their loved ones during their final days.

They have also developed a team of compassionate volunteers who help ensure that residents who do not have family members always have someone with them when they pass away.

Michelle Phillips, Service Manager at EachStep Blackley, says: “I am extremely proud that our care home has won the End of Life Care Award. I would like to thank the whole team for their hard work, compassion and dedication in caring for the people we support and their family’s during the most difficult time of their lives.

Michelle continues: “EachStep Blackley is a home for life. By working closely with the people we support, their families and health professionals, we ensure that people pass away at home with dignity and in peace and comfort.”

Paula Spence, Director of Older People’s Services at Community Integrated Care, says: “We are so proud to see EachStep Blackley recognised at these awards. The staff are truly committed to providing person-centred, compassionate end of life care and this award commends their excellent values, hard work and dedication.”
