Families of individuals supported by Care Management Group (CMG), one of the UK’s leading providers of care for people with learning disabilities and associated complex needs, came together from across the country this month to attend the group’s annual Family Conference.
The conference provides a vital opportunity for families to come together and learn more about recent developments in learning disability care and meet the people who lead CMG.
This year guests heard from experts in the field such as Matt Groves from Mencap who spoke about the things to consider when making a Will or Trust for a person with learning disabilities. Katie Clarke from charity group, Bringing Us Together, also gave top tips on avoiding crisis and admission into Assessment and Treatment Units (ATU’s).
Following the talks there were workshops on topics such as relationships and sexuality for people with learning disabilities, and guests were also treated to a performance from The Brelade Players, a sketch comedy group formed by people who are supported by CMG.
The conference is a valuable opportunity for family members to share their knowledge and experiences, and network with others in similar situations. It also provides a key channel of communication between CMG and those it supported.
The idea for the conference was conceived after CMG helped launch the Driving Up Quality Code in 2013. After holding a full self-assessment day addressing each aspect of the Code, CMG found that integral to meeting the Code’s commitments was to ensure there are always clear lines of communication between themselves and the families they support, and to provide information around developments in the learning disability sector. This conference is just one of the ways they are working to fulfil this commitment.
CMG received excellent feedback from participants on the day who said, “The content of the day was first class and the organisation first class” and “All the speakers we heard covered subjects about which we had some concerns. It was so good to be provided with pathways to solutions/improvement.”
Peter Kinsey, CEO of Care Management Group, said:
“We were delighted once again to welcome people from across the CMG community to our annual Family Conference. It is an invaluable opportunity to provide the families of those we support with the chance to access information and support and a fantastic way for them to share their experience with others in the CMG family.
“It is just one of the ways we are ensuring that there are open lines of communication, and is a key part of our commitment to ensuring we are continuously driving up the great quality of care we already offer.”
