A family-run business which turned tragedy into opportunity is creating 100 new jobs in Sheffield’s healthcare sector after announcing plans to open a new purpose-built care centre in the city.

The latest development at Wood Hill will add to the existing 300 jobs already created within South Yorkshire by Dinnington-based Horizon Care. Construction of Wood Hill Lodge, which is designed to support the needs of individuals with learning disabilities and complex care needs, began earlier this year.

Wood Hill Lodge will provide both short-term respite and long term care support. It forms part of a new care village developed by Horizon, designed to support a wide range of care needs. Based on Grimethorpe Road, customers will benefit from access to a unique rooftop garden which boasts stunning panoramic views across the city as well as access to a hydrotherapy pool and even an on-site cinema.

As the finishing touches are added to the new facility, the company has launched its single largest recruitment drive to date with a number of new positions being created to cover a range of full time roles.

Laura Higginbottom, managing director, Horizon Care Homes said:

“This latest development will offer the highest level of care to some of the most vulnerable people in our society, assisting them to live as independently as possible.

At the same time we are creating an additional 100 jobs, many of them highly skilled and offering great career potential which is great news for the local economy. We currently have a wide range of vacancies available ranging from nursing to support workers to chefs and managers.

“It has always been our long term aim to challenge many of the negative stereotypes associated with the care industry. The launch of Wood Hill Lodge later this month marks a significant step in the development of our plans to create unique community which provides individuals with a wide range of care needs with the chance to live as independently as possible, whilst benefiting from high levels care and support.

“As a Sheffield-based business, our Wood Hill complex is our flagship centre. Our existing care centres have achieved good ratings by the CQC and the opening of Wood Hill Lodge will not only help more people in the city to build a career in the healthcare sector, but perhaps most importantly of all will ensure that loved ones can receive care and support when they need it most.”

Horizon Care was launched in 2007 and is headquartered on the same site as Waterside Grange. The family business was launched when a family member was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and needed long term care.

The family discovered an acute shortage of high quality care centres, delivered in fit-for-purpose buildings and set about developing purpose-built care centres in South Yorkshire which place an emphasis on the quality of care delivered. Today, the company operates five care centres within South Yorkshire and is still owned and operated by the family.
