Care home resident honoured for a decade of charity knitting

edna-2A resident at Fornham House Care home in Fornham St Martin, near Bury St Edmunds, has been honoured by staff for her years of charity work.  101-year-old Edna Johnston has been knitting for the Shoebox charity for 10 years, knitting clothes and toys to be sent abroad to children in need at Christmas time.

Manager of Fornham House, Irina Catanescu, has presented Edna with a bouquet of flowers in recognition of her years of work for the charity.

Edna moved to Bury St Edmunds to be near her daughter 10 years ago and began knitting for her church, the United Reform Church. The Church regularly donated filled shoeboxes to the appeal and Edna donated hats, scarves, teddy bears, puppets and bags.

Since moving to Fornham House a year ago, Edna has continued to knit as much as she can, making hats and scarves for the shoebox appeal.  Edna learnt to knit at school, but it was when she had her two children that her passion for knitting and sewing grew as she made clothes for them  Whilst a member of the Women’s’ Institute, she won many prizes for the beautiful knitted toys she made and has regularly made gifts and clothes for her six grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

Edna has dedicated a great many years to volunteering and charity work, volunteering for the Royal Mail as a savings collector and then for the Women’s’ Royal Voluntary Service (WRVS).  Edna was still volunteering for the WRVS lunch club, taking people out in their wheelchairs on trips to the seaside at the age of 80.

Fornham House Manager Irina Catanescu said: “We were delighted to present Edna with a bouquet of flowers as a gesture of our admiration and gratitude for her years of charity donations and voluntary work.

“Edna has spent so many years helping others and donating her wonderful knitted items for charity.  We are very proud to have her with us at Fornham House and look forward to seeing her fantastic creations for the Christmas appeal this year. Should anyone wish to donate spare wool for Edna’s knitting endeavours, please contact Fornham House directly on 01284 768327.”
