As the Rio Olympics came to a grand close and Team GB gathered a record medal haul success, on the other side of the Atlantic in Spondon, Derby, there was friendly competition at The Laurels care home, as residents participated in an inclusive and accessible sports day.
Run in partnership with the Disabilities Team at Derby City Council, the Laurels welcomed in friends and family, who cheered on enthusiastic residents challenging competitor teams from neighbouring care homes, Sherwood Forest and The Park.
With Olympian levels of enthusiasm, the teams participated in a wide range of sporting activities. The spirit of the day promoted inclusivity, and all sports were fully accessible to residents of all abilities, including those in wheelchairs.
Kerry Preston-Carr Home Manager at The Laurels, commented:
“We all had a fantastic day, bringing together residents from across the Embrace family for some friendly sporting fun. Residents who want to participate in sports should be fully supported, and it was a pleasure to work with the Council to deliver a day of inclusive activities.”
The Laurels is part of Embrace Group, and provides residential, nursing and physical disability care for older people.
