A report published today provides an overview of the number of people with learning disabilities and/or autism receiving inpatient care in hospital.

The Learning Disabilities Statistics Annual Overview is the first annual report of its kind from the Health and Social Care Information Centre (HSCIC).  It brings together various sources of statistics to produce robust data on the number of people with learning disabilities or autistic spectrum disorder. Analysis focuses on the Assuring Transformation collection and provides counts of inpatients who are:

  • Admitted or transferred to hospital
  • Discharged or transferred from hospital
  • Receiving inpatient care
  • Receiving long-term inpatient care (over 5 years)

The report also includes information about the number of inpatients aged under 18 years old with learning disabilities or autism admitted to hospital, including length of stay and age at admission.

Data is collected from the Assuring Transformation Learning Disability Census2; Hospital Episode Statistics; the Quality Outcomes Framework; the Mental Health and Learning Disabilities Data Set and the Mental Health Services Data Set, all published by the Health and Social Care Information Centre.
