Ninety-year-old Anne, who has lived at Watling Court for almost four years, had not had lunch with her sister, who lives in a nursing home on the other side of Gravesend for over two years, so Jean, a carer at Watling Court decided to grant her wish and surprise her by taking her to visit her sister, so the pair could enjoy a Christmas lunch together.
On 22nd December, accompanied by Jean, Anne made the trip to the nursing home to visit, Mavis and enjoy a celebratory lunch and long overdue catch up.
Speaking after her lunch with Mavis, Anne said: “I thought we were going to town to do some shopping but when we drove through Northfleet, I realised we were going somewhere else. When we pulled up at the home I knew where I was and I called Jean a cheeky monkey! We enjoyed catching up on things and I didn’t want to leave Mavis behind but it was a really beautiful thing to have happened and I am very grateful Jean planned this.”
Upon seeing her sister, Mavis commented: “I haven’t had lunch with my sister for more than two years! We always used to go about together so it really was a lovely surprise!”
The Wish Appeal is a fundraising initiative, which relies solely on donation and aims to grant wishes for the residents living in The Abbeyfield Kent Society’s homes. Whether wishes are big or small, staff work hard to make them come true, even if that means bringing the Caribbean to them.
To donate to the appeal, visit www.justgiving.com/abbeyfieldkent, or text ‘WISH05’ followed by the amount to 70070, e.g. ‘WISH05 £10’
