Cheshire care home goes digital with free Wi-Fi


hill%20house1 picLeonard Cheshire Disability is proud to announce its inclusion in a new BT and Barclays initiative to bring free Wi-Fi and hands-on digital support to the Leonard Cheshire Hill House Care Home in Cheshire.


The new initiative complements Leonard Cheshire Disability’s existing Discover IT scheme, through which we have supported nearly 6,000 people develop their skills and interests over the last five years.


One in three disabled people have never used the internet, while disabled people represent 54 percent of the total number of people who have never used the internet in UK.


Hill House is a valued care home within the local community and free internet access, combined with expert support, will open up opportunities that being online has to offer.


BT is supporting the set-up of free Wi-Fi connectivity while BT Digital Friends and Barclays Digital Eagles, specially trained members of Barclays’ staff, will provide free technology advice to help local people build confidence and develop the skills they need to succeed in the digital world.


In the UK some 12 percent of the adult population have never been online and this increases to 61 percent for those over 75 years old.

BT and Barclays have both committed to support the implementation of the Government’s Digital Inclusion strategy which aims to reduce the number of people offline in the UK by 25 per cent by 2016. Find out more about the Government Digital Strategy and the UK Digital Inclusion Charter.


Free Wi-Fi was set-up in Hill House in July and Barclays Digital Eagles/BT Digital Friends will be on-hand to support in the near future.
