Nick CleggLiberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg today (Thursday 23 April) unveiled plans to guarantee a “bonus” of up to to £250 for all carers looking after elderly, ill or disabled loved one. The party also plans to consult with business on plans to give workers five days of paid “care leave” a year, and increase the amount people can earn without losing their carer’s allowance entitlement from £110 a week to £150.

Alzheimer’s Society comment:

Jeremy Hughes, Chief Executive of Alzheimer’s Society said: ‘The 670,000 carers of people with dementia currently save the UK economy £11 billion every year. These unsung heroes face daily challenges in caring for a person with dementia. Alzheimer’s Society has long been advocating for a flexible support package for carers that includes carers leave, financial support for carers and access to other services such as respite care or psychological support.

‘We are pleased that the Liberal Democrats are adopting our call for financial support of carers as this has the potential to improve the quality of life for both people with dementia and those who look after them.’
