Resident Terry Rutter (67) proposed to his fellow resident Anne Renshaw (72), who he met at the home and fell in love with in October 2014.

Following the proposal, which took place in front of residents and members of staff at the home, everyone enjoyed a big love-themed party with entertainment by a local singer.

Terry, who was an Industrial Cleaner at MIC Saltley in Birmingham and has been married before, has two children who were very happy with the news.

Anne, who used to make wheelchairs and also did the laundry work in a factory, has a brother and sister who were thrilled to hear of her engagement.

Located on Victoria Road in Stechford, St Marthas Care Centre, which is part of Akari Care, provides nursing care, including dementia care, for up to 70 residents.

Ben Barkat, Manager at St Marthas Care Centre, said: “We are delighted that Terry and Anne are happily engaged and members of staff have been careful to ensure that their wishes are respected.

“We will be working with our residents to fully support their choice and this engagement shows that care homes are not always the end, but sometimes the beginning, of our residents’ lives.”

Terry Rutter said: “I was nervous when I proposed to Anne, but was delighted when she said she’d be my wife. We would like to say thank you to the members of staff at the home for throwing such a great party for us and we are looking forward to enjoying our engagement together at St Marthas.”
