The over 55s in South Devon will have greater choice about their accommodation in the future, thanks to a deal which has been signed between Sanctuary Group and Dartington Hall Trust.
Abundant Life is an innovative community and housing development designed to offer personalised care for older people sited in the grounds of historic Dartington Hall Estate, near Totnes. It will also offer community facilities for all local people.
Leading housing and care provider Sanctuary has now entered into a partnership with Dartington Hall Trust to develop the community offer including these new homes.
Significant local resident and stakeholder consultation has already taken place and now the next step is to apply for planning permission for the scheme.
The details of the development are still being considered but the application is likely to be for a wide range of community facilities for all, alongside more than 170 high-quality apartments for rent and to buy.
The well-designed community facilities, such as an arts and craft space, a community café, a health and well-being centre and a children’s nursery have all been and will continue to be the subject of wide community engagement in their design.
The planning application is likely to be submitted in the summer.
Steve Wood, Group Director – Property at Sanctuary Group, said: “This innovative project was immediately attractive to Sanctuary Group because it turns the concept of older people’s accommodation on its head.
“We are keen to develop a striking and beautiful development that leads to a vibrant, energetic community and we are looking forward to getting the ball rolling.”
Celia Atherton, Social Justice Director at Dartington, said: “We, and the local and wider community who have been working with us on this project, recognise Sanctuary’s commitment and energy to this project.
“By collaborating with Sanctuary, we will be able to realise our vision of providing something much better than is on offer anywhere else for the older people in our community.”
