Staff at a Worcester care home are celebrating after being awarded with the prestigious Worcestershire Dementia Standard for the second year running.

Northwick Grange Care Home has been awarded the sought-after Worcestershire County Council accreditation which rates care homes on their approach and successes when caring with residents with dementia.

The home, which is registered with the Care Quality Commission to care for up to 25 residents, was praised for developing a range of initiatives which help to stimulate and engage with residents who live with dementia-type illnesses.

They include staff’s pro-active relationships with families, their approach to mealtimes, nutrition and a programme of social activities. They also have a specially secured garden at the home in Old Northwick Lane which helps residents in the spring and summer months.

Care Manager Dawn Hooper, said: “We pride ourselves on providing the best quality care for all of our residents. Some residents have been diagnosed with dementia so we have introduced a successful programme, led by our dementia champion Donna White, which focusses on every detail to make residents as comfortable and as engaged as possible.

“We make sure we know the background of every resident and have a fantastic programme of activities led by our activity co-ordinator Debbie Cross which can trigger nice memories and generally help people who live with the condition.

“We find that close interaction and getting outdoors to enjoy the sights, sounds and smells works wonders.

“Everyone here is so proud to have been recognised for the second year running. It shows the authorities are noticing the difference we are trying to make to people’s lives.”

It is estimated that there are 750,000 people living with dementia in the UK and that this figure will rise to over one million by 2025.

Northwick Grange Care Home is part of the privately-owned Redwood Healthcare Group which is based in Worcestershire.
