Nick Sanderson, CEO, Audley Retirement Villages:

“Finally, this government has recognised that there might be a correlation between improving housing options for older people, and reducing the pressures on the NHS. The Budget does not go far enough, but we can at least welcome the intent to explore the issue. The government should take note of a study published by the ILC back in 2011, which found that people over 80 with care needs were half as likely to need to live in an institutional care home if they lived in retirement villages with extra care options. I hope now that the long term benefits for older people of living in suitable accommodation are recognised and acted on. No one wants to enter a care home, and the NHS is cracking under the strain. But there are solutions and it is about time they were fully explored. Providing high quality accommodation that allows older people to enjoy an active lifestyle, stay in control of their own home and their future care needs delivers fundamental health and cost benefits.”
