Poll shows three quarters of adults don’t want relatives in care over the Christmas holidays
A poll from leading care provider, Sunrise Senior Living, shows nearly three quarters of adults in the UK (73%) would prefer their elderly relatives to be with them, rather than in a care home over the Christmas holidays; with two in every five of Britons (41%) saying they are concerned about being alone themselves during Christmas when they are older.
As families come together over the festive period, it is clear there is no place like home. However, a quarter of respondents (25%) said they worry about being able to look after their elderly relatives over Christmas.
Commenting on the results, Amanda Scott, Managing Director of Sunrise Senior Living, said:
“The poll shows we need to change perceptions of what life is like at a care home – not only at Christmas but all year round. It’s a completely different experience from what many people might think. They are lively, happy places.
“Being alone over Christmas is clearly a concern for people as they grow older. A care home can provide great comfort and support for any older person particularly at this time of year.
“Christmas day at all of our Sunrise communities is just like being at home. We have a big lunch with all the trimmings, we sing songs and play games. Whilst many residents’ families come and visit them, for those who are alone, our care staff and other residents are their family.
“With a quarter of people concerned about being able to look after elderly relatives, care homes shouldn’t be seen as a last resort. There are many different care options which can be considered – whether it is longer term care or short term, respite care.”
