A care spokesman today urged everyone to remember the ‘Cinderella’ carers this Christmas and New Year period.
Mike Padgham, Chair of the Independent Care Group (York and North Yorkshire) said those providing care over the holidays were often forgotten.
“Far too many times carers, both paid and unpaid, are left out like Cinderella during the festive period,” he said.
“While everyone else is out enjoying themselves, this group of unsung heroes continue to do their job. A daily knock on the door from a homecarer might be the only contact some people get at a time when everyone else is celebrating with family and friends. And in care homes too, staff will be working round the clock to ensure that people enjoy a happy Christmas and New Year.
“We do, quite rightly, remember all the emergency services who will be working this Christmas and New Year but we must remember our carers too.
“Many will get very little break and will be working extra hard to ensure people continue to get the care they need.
“Carers don’t always get the recognition that they deserve and if I have a hope for 2015 it is that we all start to better appreciate the excellent job that they do.”
