Hartford Care-Care industry NewsTo mark the occasion of International Volunteer Day on 5th December, Nicole Standivan, Marketing Assistant at local care provider, Hartford Care decided to visit Boulters Lock residential care home in Maidenhead and find out, first-hand, what it’s like to be a volunteer for the day.

Nicole travelled down to Boulters Lock from Head Office in Basingstoke where she then took volunteered to take on many different roles within the home.

For part of the morning Nicole assisted Boulters’ chef, Sheldon in the Kitchen, creating a delicious chocolate sauce to decorate a freshly baked batch of cupcakes and she also served residents their morning coffee.

After lunch, Nicole took on the role of an Activities Co-ordinator, where she presented a selection of activities which residents thoroughly enjoyed taking part in. These included, creating marshmallow showmen, a tasting session, Christmas reminiscence and singing and dancing.

Boulters Lock resident, Helen, enjoyed the activities so much she invited Nicole to sit with her while she played the piano. Nicole said “This experience really touched my heart as I could see Helen’s passion for playing the piano”.

Nicole went on to say “The atmosphere at Boulters Lock is very homely and the residents and staff made me feel very welcome. Taking on a volunteer role showed me how important everyone’s roles are within the home. The residents seemed very happy and loved to get stuck into anything I suggested, whether it be an activity they have done before or something new”.
