
Whyburn Parkes, who will turn 100 next month, attends a Remembrance Day book reading event at Bupa’s West Ridings Residential and Nursing Home
Bupa care home resident Whyburn Parkes, who turns 100 next month took part in Remembrance Day celebrations at West Ridings Residential and Nursing Home in Wakefield.
Whyburn was commemorated during WWII for his work in intercepting German ships off the Norwegian coast.
Almost 70 years later and his courage and efforts were celebrated again with staff and residents and in a special Remembrance Day event that took place at the home earlier this week.
Describing the events that led him to be mentioned in despatches Whyburn enthralled listeners with a description of his ship being hit by bombs ”The ship rocked like a cork but there was no panic”
