On September 20, around 50 people will be taking part in a Memory Walk in aid of the Alzheimer’s Society. The fundraiser will take place at Dinton Pastures Country Park, Wokingham. Amongst the expected families, children, and dogs will be at least 12 members of Optalis staff, who will be giving up their Saturday morning to walk laps around the lake.
‘Memory Walk’ is a series of fundraising walking events taking place across England, Wales and Northern Ireland during the autumn; all raising money to provide vital support to people living with dementia, and help the Alzheimer’s Society continue their research to find a cure.
Gemma Lacy, a senior carer and training lead in our Homecare team, has organised the event herself, and has been rallying staff and family/friends to support the cause. She is hoping to reach a target of £500.
Gemma said: “I’ve worked in care the past 17 years, and all of my jobs have had some kind of dementia focus. I organised this event as, being a dementia champion already, I thought why not! The Alzheimer’s Society invests a great deal in their research, and this research is going to be really important for all our futures. It’s important that we keep treating people with dementia as people, and that we all have access to good information.”
To reward the efforts of walkers, there’ll be homemade cakes and refreshments available after the walk is complete, and each participant will receive a certificate. Optalis is sponsoring the event and will be helping Gemma reach her target (as well as covering insurance costs).
