A flock of chickens have moved into Dalby Court Care Home in Middlesbrough and are proving feathery favourites with the residents and staff.

The chickens were a gift from the family of Dalby Court resident Jim, who used to keep chickens on his allotment. Knowing how much Jim would enjoy having some new fluffy friends around, and how many of the other residents enjoy spending time with animals, Jim’s family and the care home staff set about making the home’s garden ‘chicken friendly’.

Now, chickens Diane, Gill and Lillian – named after members of the Dalby Court staff – have officially moved into their coop and run, and have even started laying eggs.

The residents are thoroughly enjoying having the chickens around; keeping a check on how many eggs are laid daily and watching over them as they explore their new home.

The chickens even made an appearance at this year’s Dalby Court sports day… one managing to nab first place in the egg and spoon race!

Diane Maughan, Manager at Dalby Court, commented;

“It’s been fantastic welcoming the chickens to the Dalby Court community. The residents and staff are really enjoying having them around, with the eggs being an added bonus.

“Many of our residents are animal lovers and they have been a very popular addition to the home!”

Dalby Court, part of Embrace, provides general residential and Elderly Mentally Ill residential care for older people.
