The installation of variable height bathroom equipment from Pressalit Care has played an important role in the refurbishment of The Donna Louise Children’s Hospice in Trentham, Stoke-on-Trent.
Having first seen the flexibility of bathroom furniture from Pressalit Care at the Naidex trade exhibition, and learned at first-hand how its design can really benefit independent living, Dot Gillespie, Director of Care at The Donna Louise, approached Pressalit Care to work with them as part of a planned refurbishment with a £483M grant funded by The Department of Health’s Capital Programme.
Following close discussion and advice as to the most appropriate selection of bathroom elements for The Donna Louise’s requirements, Pressalit Care partnered with Sheffield company, Kingkraft to design, supply and fit-out a series of bathrooms, shower rooms and bedrooms.
Among the bathroom elements installed have been a Pressalit Care Flexible Height Nursing Table, Pressalit Care’s Plus Track System, which allows elements of the bathroom to be adjusted horizontally, and the Select Height Adjustable Basin Brackets, which allow the wash basins to be moved up and down, with an easily operated hand control. The flexibility of the Pressalit Care bathroom elements means that bathrooms are now fully future-proofed, and can easily cater for residents of different abilities and levels of independence.
The Donna Louise cares for young people with shortened life expectancies up the age of 19.
Dot Gillespie comments, “Our existing bathrooms were very dated, and did not suit the needs of our young people. We were so impressed with the quality of the Pressalit Care bathrooms, and how the flexibility really enhanced the ability for independent use, together with flexibility for carers where assistance is required. It was clear that once installed, the equipment would provide long lasting, and varied benefits for us.
“We therefore approached Pressalit Care to work with us on our refurbishment and we have been delighted with the results. The new bathrooms have made a huge difference to everyone here.”
Working with the Care Team at The Donna Louise in the planning of the bathrooms, Pressalit Care understood completely the requirement to make the bathrooms accessible for many different users over a period of time. With over thirty five years’ experience in the design of bathrooms where flexibility is required, Pressalit Care was able to bring a real depth of understanding to the design.
Enabling a young person to stay in the same room, and use the same bathroom, as their condition alters, thanks to the ability to adjust the bathroom layout, is integral to the Pressalit Care ethos of independent living. For the carers too, this means strains are avoided when basins and nursing tables are at an incorrect height.
Andrew Lowndes, UK Sales Manager for Pressalit Care says, “Retaining independence as much as possible for the young people using the bathrooms was a really important consideration for The Donna Louise. The bathrooms have therefore been designed to allow for wheelchair manoeuvrability, as well as working space for carers where needed.”
He continues, “The experience that Pressalit Care has in designing bathrooms for hospice and care home installations allows us to recommend design solutions that work on an individual basis. We’ve been delighted to work with The Donna Louise, and we know that they, and their families, will benefit from the bathrooms for many years to come.”
