£6 million Canterbury care home underway

Sanctuary Care-Care Industry NewsWork has begun on a new state-of-the art care home in Canterbury.

Sanctuary Group is developing the 60-bedroom care home in Hersden, on empty land at the junction of Blackthorn Road and Island Road, in a £6 million project due for completion in the summer of 2015.

The new Sanctuary Care home will be built by Sanctuary’s Construction partner Castleoak and will offer high quality care for older people. It will also include a range of communal facilities to enhance the quality of life of future residents, with shared lounges and dining areas, a garden room and terrace on the first floor as well as landscaped gardens.

To celebrate the start of construction of the new care home, Sanctuary Group held a ground-breaking ceremony at the site on Friday 30 May, attended by The Sheriff of Canterbury, Councillor Tony Austin, his escort, Mrs Pauline Austin, and other local partners.

Following a look at the plans for the new development and a tour of the site, The Sheriff was invited to dig the first spade into the ground to mark the start of the scheme, which is set to provide much-needed care accommodation for Canterbury and the surrounding area, as well as new employment opportunities on completion.

Penny Halliday, Sanctuary’s Head of Development – Commercial, said: “We’re pleased that so many of our local partners joined us to mark the start of construction of our new care home in Hersden. This is a forward-thinking project set to provide much-needed residential and dementia care for older people in this part of Kent.”

Councillor Austin said: “I was delighted to be asked to dig the first spade and get work on this important project underway. Looking after older people and providing them with high quality care is essential. Both during and after construction, the employment created by the new care home will also be most welcome to the district. I look forward to seeing the scheme develop in the months ahead.”

Paul Mannings, Partnerships Director at Castleoak added: “We are delighted to once again work with Sanctuary Group. We look forward to delivering this care home which will be at the heart of the community.”
