Leeds-based care home operator Silk Healthcare has purchased the late Sir Jimmy Savile’s yellow BMW Isetta bubble car at an auction held yesterday in Saviles Hall at the Royal Armouries in Leeds. Almost 550 lots of memorabilia went under the hammer to raise money for his charitable trust.
Angela Swift, Managing Director at Silk Healthcare purchased the iconic yellow 1965 BMW Isetta 300 Plus for £22,000 after fierce bidding for the car. It will take pride of place in the entrance at firm’s new 83-bed care home Mapplewell Manor which is located in Mapplewell, Barnsley and currently under construction and due for completion in February 2013. Angela also purchased the outfit that Sir Jimmy wore when he opened Silk Healthcare’s care home in Teeside Reuben Manor back in 2009.
Managing Director Angela Swift, of Silk Healthcare explained:
“We have bought the car for our residents. Many of our residents have different stages of dementia so this will hopefully provide them with some nostalgic memories as we will be placing it inside our new facility in Mapplewell. Many residents remember Jimmy from when he opened up one of our homes Reuben Manor a few years back. We were looking for a celebrity to open it and many were asking for upwards of £15,000. When we asked Jimmy how much he would charge he was shocked at the question and said he would never charge to do such a thing. I guess this is our way of giving something back to him and his charity and providing a fabulous addition for our residents.”
Located on Greenside Avenue, Mapplewell Manor will be a new residential care home and senior centre specialising in dementia care and is due to open its doors in February 2013. It will bring approximately 90 full and part time jobs to the area and unrivalled facilities including spacious rooms – all with en-suite, café, coffee lounge for residents and their families and landscaped gardens.
Silk Healthcare is a family run business established by Angela Swift in 2009 after the opening of the firm’s first care home Reuben Manor. Her commitment and high standards were rewarded within months of the opening when Angela was voted the Most Outstanding New Entrant to the Over 50s Housing Awards. Silk Healthcare continues to provide affordable facilities within luxurious surroundings and specialises in high quality residential and dementia care for the elderly. Mapplewell Manor will be Silk Healthcare’s third care home in addition to Reuben Manor in Teesside and Heather Grange in Burnley. A fourth home is also planned for construction in Colne, Lancashire next year.
